Members of the Council have undertaken a routine inspection of the memorials at Stanwick Cemetery, Chelveston Road. This involves a visual inspection and a hand wobble test. We do not use any form of mechanical device to put pressure on a memorial.
One memorial was found to be unsafe and that is on grave 162 in the name of Gordon Whitlock. A sign has been placed on the memorial to make people aware.
Some headstones are found to be a ‘priority fail 2’ which means that the memorial is not an immediate danger but is not fully stable and will therefore need to be monitored every 12 months to assess further deterioration.
In all cases the responsibility for repair of these memorials rests with the owner of the grave or their descendants. Repair work should only be undertaken by a memorial mason with the appropriate insurances in place. If you intend to arrange for repair work, please notify the parish clerk.
When visiting the cemetery, please take care around all headstones, memorials and other features. Some may be old, fragile, uneven or unstable.
Please keep children supervised and do not lean, sit or climb on any memorial.
